The importance of proper hand washing has often been emphasized as a preventive measure against Coronavirus Disease or COVID-19. But strengthening our immune system may also prevent us from getting this dreaded disease.
According to former Health Secretary and now president of Health Futures Foundation, Inc., Dr. Jaime Galvez Tan, our immune system works as our first line of defense against diseases. “Ito ‘yung mga sundalo ng katawan. Sari-saring sundalo, sari-saring laban, may kaniya-kaniyang trabaho. Tulad ng isang giyera, meron din siyang kaniya-kaniyang trabaho. Meron ‘yung panimulang laban, merong nasa sabihin nating second battalion, at meron naman yung mga tumutulong lamang sa tabi-tabi. Kagaya n’yan ‘yung mga nag-aalaga ng may-sakit,” he says.
(These are our bodies’ soldiers, with each having its own role, like in a real battle. Some are in the first line of defense; others are in the second battalion while others, still, watch from the sidelines like the medical team.”
